Abstract

This paper presents a comparative review of the art education assessment systems in China and Malaysia, focusing on the challenges and opportunities faced by both countries. Art education plays a crucial role in fostering creativity, cultural identity, and critical thinking; however, assessing student performance in this field remains complex due to its subjective and expressive nature. In Malaysia, the implementation of classroom-based assessment in visual arts education faces several obstacles, including insufficient teacher training, inconsistent implementation, and the elective status of art subjects that diminishes their importance. Similarly, China’s art education assessment system struggles with unclear evaluation standards, a strong emphasis on technical skills over creativity, and limited integration of digital tools in assessment practices. Despite these challenges, both nations show potential for progress. In Malaysia, the integration of digital modules has enhanced students’ engagement and understanding in visual arts, signaling the benefits of innovative assessment approaches. In China, growing recognition of creativity and individual expression in educational policy offers an opportunity to reform traditional assessment methods. The study emphasizes the need for clearer guidelines, teacher capacity-building, and technology integration to create more effective and inclusive assessment systems. By examining the parallels and contrasts between China and Malaysia, this paper contributes to a deeper understanding of how art education assessment can evolve to meet the needs of 21st-century students, while respecting cultural and systemic differences. The findings aim to guide educators, policymakers, and researchers in developing more equitable and meaningful art education assessment practices
